Why choose Ugli to build my website?

Approach

One of the advantages of working with a small studio like Ugli is that you are more likely to get the site you dream of, rather than the template-based dross turned out by some others when tasked with making a site for a small firm.

To make a site successful, it needs to generate lots of visitors, and that's why it's important to have a site that is fully compliant with current W3C web standards. By meeting these constantly updating standards, websites built by Ugli will be indexed higher by (read more visible in) search engines. Whether you choose to work with Ugli or not, it is important to check your web designer will be following these rules to help make the web a better place.

What's Optimisation?

Optimising every site we create is important to us. Optimising a website means you are making it more efficient by generating more hits from search engines. This includes:

  • Submitting your site to all the major search engines - Google, Yahoo, MSN, Ask etc.
  • Making the site accessible. This is a complicated one, but an example is not using tables for layouts, which makes the site more readable by screen readers, as used by the blind.
  • Use of text for titles and not cheating by using images like some others. This site is a good example; everything (bar the logo) is text and therefore can be read by search engines. You can see how search engines view websites by right clicking on this page and select 'View Source'. You will find that you can't see any images there, and nor will search engines!
  • Search engines have got clever. You used to be able to 'trick' a search engine into ranking your page higher than it should be (known as 'Black Hat Techniques'), by concealing keywords on your page making them the same colour as the background. This would mean they can be seen by the search engine in the source code for a site, but not by you - the end user. Search engines have got wise to this and now actually knock you down the rankings for using such techniques.

The Design Process

Although we are happy to design you a site from scratch, without bothering you at all, we prefer to involve you to make sure you get the website you want. To make this easy, we follow these steps:

  1. We meet to discuss what you're looking for in a site, including pages, content and images.
  2. Benchmarking is an important step in the design process, so if you've seen a few websites you like the feel of, just let us know so we can make a good start in the right direction.
  3. We'll produce an image based mockup of what the site will look like.
  4. Once you've received the mockup, you can make changes by telephone, email, or if you prefer, in person.
  5. A final mockup is produced.
  6. Once this is approved, we build the site ready for your content.
  7. We then make the site live, and keep track of visitor behaviours through Google Analytics. You'll receive a weekly email telling you about visitor numbers, where they're from and what they're looking for.
  8. Once we have the first full month of analytic data, we'll re-examine your site to see if there are any improvements to be made.
